My Sanctuary 39 Years Ago

Portrait Vancouver Photographer creates Short Story

A Documentary Story of My Sanctuary 39 Years Ago

While back in Hong Kong 2010 for a family visit; I went back to the similar housing units I once lived during my childhood years. A sanctuary where thousands of  low incomes Hong Kong residents lived during the 70’s era. At 2015 there are only few handful of this buildings exist. What drove me to Vancouver documentary story video? I guess I’m retracing my foot print where I grew up and the memories stayed with me. UPDATE: Fast forward 2017 this old buildings will have been renovating for government usage such as living spaces for people working for the governments. Portrait Vancouver photographer is Vancouver Filmmaker, Video production for companies and Corporate Company.

Low Income Buildings with Pubic Washrooms

Each apartment does not have running water or private washroom. Each buildings are seven floors and each floors has public washrooms and waters. Each house hold are responsible for their own water; every household have a water tank storage by the side of the balcony. Each apartment is about 100-square feet and some is a bigger, everyone has a bunk beds and I shared my bed with my sister. Since the buildings are designed for low income population, it is very common to have seven people or bigger family to stay in 200 square feet unit. It is a place where you real get to know your neighbours as each house hold cook at the balcony where everyone walked.

Walking through the Balcony brings back Childhood Memories

As I walked the stairs, the balcony, the public washrooms , it brought back my childhood memories of yesterday. I’m glad my dad captured some footage during the 70’s with his super 8mm film camera as it gave me this story ideas. And it so happened, it was 39 years ago this day our family arrived to Canada as we called home.

Below are the video footage related to the 70′s housing
