A wedding venue review video with Allan Burnett of the Chapel at Queen Elizabeth Park in Vancouver. The Chapel at Queen Elizabeth Park is located between Main street and Cambie Street of Vancouver, here Allan Burnett giving us some of the highlight of the Queen Elizabeth Pavilion: What makes this place special is that right behind me, you can see that the back walls of the chapel are what we call a ‘clamshell door.’ It opens up, so you get beautiful landscaping no matter what the weather is like. We’ve had weddings when it was pouring rain outside. Water was coming down. It was beautiful. And we’ve had it in the wintertime. During the 2010 Olympics, we had the doors open for a wedding, so it can be opened up like that any time in the year.

Chapel at Queen Elizabeth Park: Point of View by Wayne Lam

I attend lots of weddings at many venues as a wedding photographer and videographer. No two weddings are alike, so there should be a wedding venue to suit every brides plans. I give you a backstage pass to the venue with a review of how it will function once you and your guests arrive.

Location – Accessibility, Easy to Find

The Chapel at Queen Elizabeth Park must be accessed through the Queen Elizabeth Park as there is ONLY one road that leads to the Chapel. Guests need to watch out for signs as they can easily miss the sharp turn heading up to the ‘Celebration Pavilion,’ the name used on signs. The best way is to remind guests to look for the Celebration Pavilion sign. Once you reach the top and past the Seasons in the Park Restaurant, you will reach a sharp turn. Just before you exit the turn, there is a road on the right that will lead you to the top. There is a small sign but it may be blocked by foliage and can be missed if you don’t pay attention.

The venue is surrounded by the natural environment. When the backdoor is open, you will feel the nature around you. During a summer day with no breeze, you can still feel warm even though the sun doesn’t penetrate through the building. To enjoy the ceremony, I would suggest having some refreshments close by. Even though most of the time you will feel comfortable with the venue, you will have to be careful of a hot summer day or a cool day as there is no fan or air conditioning in the building. However, the bride’s room does have air conditioning.

Parking – Bridal Party and Guests

There are a number of pay parking spaces available at Queen Elizabeth Park. The parking lot does get busy as you need to arrive early to purchase tickets. Before buying your ticket, it is best to remember your car license number as that will be asked for. If you parked your car further away, this will prevent you from walking back to your car to look at the plate numbers. Free parking can be found around the bottom of the park by the pond but can be a challenge for anyone needing assistance as there are steep hills to cross.

Decor

The décor at the Chapel is simple. As Allan Burnett said, the Chapel has décor specialists who can come in to “create anything that your heart desires.”

Venue Extra Services

Many services are available. I’ve noticed the Chapel’s private bride’s room is air conditioned. It can accommodate a handful of bridesmaids and family members getting ready and preparing for the photo shoot.

Photography Location

When the backdoor is open, there are many places for you to photograph without interruption. Since the venue is circular-shaped, there are entrances from the north, south, east and west, making photographing easy to access. If rain does occur as we are in Vancouver, the bride portrait can be photographed inside or at Bloedel Conservatory, which is 100 feet away. The only thing I’ve noticed when photographing during a sunny day is the strong contrast between indoor and outdoor. It makes photography a challenge when the bride or the groom are caught in-between, the split lighting can casuse some issue if you are lack of flash skills especially when standing at the altar where there is a strong back light.

The photographer must move carefully when going backwards during the couples are exiting the venue as the platform has no railing. When crossing the narrow bridge leading to the next platform, a misstep will cause a BIG injury. This is a danger, so do pay attention to the exit. Videography Location

There is not a lot of room to video if the venue is full of guests. The only space is close to the piano and near the musician. Please read the photography section for more insight.
