The Beautiful Mind of Sandra Yuen MacKay

My first contact with schizophrenia was when someone close to me came down with such an unbelievable illness. It was an illness I would never imagine a happy and easygoing person free from drugs and alcohol abuse could come down with. It was very shocking to me! This was the first time I knew someone close to me who had such an illness. I had little to no knowledge about such a mental illness, such as where it came from or how to get help. I told myself I needed to learn more about schizophrenia and share the information with the world. While planning this topic, I came across a lady in Hong Kong when travelling. She was standing in the park with her head down not doing anything. I followed her to make sure she didn’t get hurt while other people just walked by and paid her little to no attention. Here is the Messager of Mental Illness Awareness Video I even called the police, but they refused to intervene. Even in Canada it is normal to leave people alone as long as they’re not hurting themselves or others.

Back in Canada, I met Sandra Yuen MacKay who was willing to help me with my project. Sandra became ill with schizophrenia when she was fourteen, but after thirty years of struggles, perseverance, and determination, she emerged as an artist, author, and public speaker on mental health issues. Here is our first team video where Sandra talks about how art has helped her channel her thoughts into paintings. An inspiring person, she has also written a book titled My Schizophrenic Life, telling the story of her darker days and how she overcame schizophrenia.

I look forward to working with Sandra to bring awareness of schizophrenia to the world, especially information on how to detect signs and where to seek help for friends and family.
