Check the Details – A Quick Lesson in Highlight and Shadow

#2 What details to look for in a photograph? Observe the photo with the wedding dress, check closely if it has detail or is it all without definition? A good photograph is a balance of highlight and shadow, where shape and form are defined. Watch out for the blob, it is a disaster in the making. So much time and money spent on to the perfect dress, you want to preserve the every detail in the photographs.

Signature Images Stand Apart

#3 Does the wedding photographers portfolio have signature images that stands apart from other photographers? Look through 5 to 10 images of each photographer, you should come across three or more photos you like. A great photographer will capture great images not just the ceremony or the portrait photos. Most wedding venues are not set up for photography, it is one of the most challenging parts of the day especially when available lights are turned down during speeches. This is why many photographers avoid showing wedding reception photos or offer very limited images.

Here is a simple exercise to understand the basic principals of lighting: Think of pointing a flashlight down a path to a far away distance. The light will illuminate for small distance, till anything beyond the reach of the flashlight will be in darkness.  To light a room where you will photograph the activity, a photographer will require additional lighting to be setup. Otherwise, you can end up with images that are only lit close to the camera, and the rest of the image fades away into darkness. Or the reverse, where the foreground, is too bright, without detail (as discussed in the wedding dress) and the remainder of the image is well defined.

With the time, effort and money invested in the dress, the tux, the venue, you want the whole picture to be captured. It would be disappointing to miss any of the drama of this once in a lifetime event.

Three easy tips, for hiring a wedding photographer. The basic rules will get you started, if you want more research for selecting a wedding photographer please subscribe to my Video Channel.
