Mental Illness Story by Christina Chen

I met Christian Chen on a FaceBook page Me Too Conversations Volume 2; Christina posted her upcoming event; Tapping into the Gift of the Wounded Healer at Hope Centre at Lions Gate Hospital. I asked her if I can do a short film story of her life and death experience of mental illness and she agreed. It is not easy to talk about mental illness openly; Christian is not shy of sharing her personal story openly that she worked to reach out to others, break down stigma and help others know that they are not alone. This real makes me wanting to know more about Christian Chen and her story.

Wounded Healer by Christina Chen

A true story how depression eventually pushed Christina Chen to the edge in 2009 when she felt there was no other way to escape the negative feelings of hopelessness except for ending her own life. She was hospitalized at Lions Gate Hospital and made a promise to herself that if she survived this hurdle, she would make sure to dedicate the rest of her life, fighting stigma surrounding mental health and supporting others with similar experiences.

Being vulnerable and sharing her story openly is one of the ways that she has worked to reach out to others, break down stigma and help others know that they are not alone. Today she has had the incredible opportunity to share her journey from my darkest moments to where she am today, and how her experience of depression has inspired her approach to counselling and life in general.

Why Mental Illness Story

I have covered few stories from the mental illness because someone special in my family has such illness, mental illness is no difference than a liver disease or cancer. The brain does get sick too and sadly we don’t see it coming until the the person hits bottom. This is where I want to tap into and share my passion using my visual storytelling to help other since one out of FIVE people does have mental illness. If you like to help please SHARING this page to help others. Thank you.
